GFC Tremains put on a top performance during their last match against Masterton Presidents. Our team dominated the game with lots of attacking threat down the flanks which stretched out the opposition. The game started with Liam Murphy scoring the opening goal for his 2nd consecutive match.
A few minutes later the home team capitalized on a scrappy cross that found their striker alone inside the small box. Not much Nestor could have done to stop the strike from such a short range which ended in the back of the net.
Tremains did not let the setback affect them. Our skipper Jim Reynolds restored our lead with a strong finish from a link-up play that came all the way from a goal kick. It was a well-deserved goal that showcased the team's teamwork and attacking prowess.
The introduction of Sam Traynor coming off the bench at the half-hour mark proved to be a masterstroke. Although he narrowly missed his first attempt on goal, he soon after struck an unstoppable knuckleball. The keeper could do nothing but watch in awe as the ball flew past him top bins bound. Before the halftime whistle, Mitch Kendall-Carpenter increased our lead by finishing off a cross from his younger brother, making it 4-1 for GFC Tremains.
In the second half, the home team capitalized on a defensive mistake to narrow the goal deficit. However, our team was determined to finish off the game and created more chances that were saved by their keeper. Another off the bench appearance help to seal the victory. Tristan Wagner hit a powerful strike into the bottom corner that crushed the opposition’s hopes.
In the final minutes, the home team called on the classic ‘last goal wins’ rule. To their disappointment our super keeper went down for one last stretch and denied their final attempt. The final whistle blew, and GFC Tremains emerged victorious with a 5-2 score.
A special mention goes to first team player Josh Thompson who came back from injury for his first game of the season and made a massive impact to our defensive line and also to Bex Hinton who couldn't be on the sidelines supporting the team due to a shoulder surgery - we wish you a speady recovery!
The fans can look forward to another exciting match, next time in our home grounds against yet another Masterton AFC team.
